Terminology
Below is a small list of common words and phrases used in the Prepper, Survivalist, and Homesteader World. The list in not complete, and many more will be added throughout the coming weeks. We are currently considering pictures and possibly videos for different items on the list.
ABAO: All Bets Are Off, synonymous with TEOTWAWKI
Activated Carbon: Is an ultra-absorbent Carbon, in powder or granular form. It is used as a filter substance to remove; chemicals, gases, elements, minerals, and even poisons.
Alga: Algae is the plural are photosynthetic organisms found primarily in water.
ALICE: All Purpose Lightweight Individual Carrying Equipment
APC: Armored Personnel Carrier
Avian Influenza or Bird Flu: Is a strain of influenza virus that naturally occurs in birds. Wild birds can carry the virus and may not get sick from it; however, domestic birds may become infected by the virus and often die from it.
Bacterium: Bacteria in the plural are single-celled organisms that are often parasitic microorganisms found to cause disease in plant, animal, and humans.
BIB: Bug In Bag

Disaster Zombie or Dizzies: Individuals or groups that have failed to prepare for a disaster and prey upon
those who have.
Disinfection: The disinfection of water is the elimination of some organisms.
DHS: Department of Homeland Security
EDE: Everyday Emergency. Hurricanes, Earthquakes, Home Fires, Physical Assault, etc. Emergencies that appear normal in severity.
EMP: Electro-Magnetic Pulse
EDC: Everyday Carry
Epidemic; Fast Spreading Disease: The rapid spread of a disease that affects some or many people in a community
or region at the same time.
Faraday Cage: An enclosure used to shield Electro-Magnetic Pulse
FEMA: Federal Emergency Management Agency
Filtration: Filtration is the physical removal of substances from water or gas.
FOB: Forward Operating Base
Force Multiplier: An attribute that provides more effectiveness to a given force that would otherwise be less effective with the attribute.
GHB: Get Home Bag also known as Return Bag
GOOD: Get Out Of Dodge. Term used to describe an immediate evacuation of a hostile environment "Dodge City".
H1N1 Influenza; Swine Flu: H1N1 influenza is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza viruses that cause regular outbreaks in pigs. Human infections can and do happen. H1N1 influenza mutations, have been reported to spread from person-to-person.
Ham: A term used to describe an amateur radio operator for private and non-commercial use.
Hard Money: A Global term used to describe redeemable precious metals, and also used to describe Prepper Resources.
HEA: Home Economics Assessment.

LOS: Line of Sight
LSD: Large-Scale Disasters. Usually Everyday Emergencies that occur outside the boundaries of what is considered normal severity.
MAD: Mutually Assured Destruction
MOLLE: Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment
MRE: Meals Ready to Eat
Network: An organization of like-minded groups and individuals sharing ideas and working together as a unit.

OPSEC: Operational Security
Pandemic; Widespread Effect: An outbreak of a disease that affects large numbers of people throughout the
world and spreads rapidly.
Pathogens: Pathogens are agents of diseases or diseases causing bacteria or viruses.
Protracted Events: Everyday Emergencies and/or Large-Scale Disasters that evolve from a single event causing a Chain Reaction.
Prep: To prepare, also means item of preparation.
Prepper: Someone who prepares for emergencies or hazardous times.
Protozoa: Protozoa are single-celled organisms commonly found in water, with the ability to move and which feed on nitrogen and carbon.

Purification: Purification is a very loose term in water treatment, that which technically means; any improvement in water.
Sand Filtration: Sand filtration is the process of filtering water through a sand pit.
Seasonal Flu; Influenza: A contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It affects an average of 5 percent to 20 percent of the U.S. population by causing mild to severe illness, and in some instances it can lead to death.
Self Reliant: Being self-sufficient in some manner, or working towards 100% independence from outsiders.

Shelf Life: The lifespan of a product, before it becomes unsafe to use or depleted.

SOP: Standard Operating Procedure
Sterilization: The sterilization of water is the complete killing of all organic material.
TEOTWAWKI: The End of the World as we Know It
Turbidity: Suspended solids which cause cloudiness of water.
Virus: Viruses are submicroscopic parasitic forms of nucleic acid surrounded by protein. Viruses can only replicate within a host.
Water Distillation: Distillation is the boiling of water into a gas, which removes impurities, then the condensing of it back into a liquid.
Water Pasteurization: Is the heating and killing of all organisms and the removal of some elements in water through the process of distillation. Water Pasteurization occurs at about 150 degrees f.

YOYO: You're On Your Own. (When government ceases to provide essential services such as fire department and police department protection, and when utilities no longer provide water, sanitation, electricity and phone service.)
